Dan Williams (Minister of Mental Health and Addictions)
Board met with MLA Dan Williams (Minister of Mental Health and Addictions) to discuss Mental Health & Wellness in HFCRD Schools.Minister Williams noted HFCRD’s initiative and leadership in creating a budget of approximately $1 million dollars to provide wellness workers throughout the division’s schools. Approximately $800,000 above the government grants supplied for the positions.As of the Fall 2023, HFCRD has installed vape detectors in all schools and has seen a decrease in activity in the schools.The division has been contacted by other school divisions and principals from across the country who are looking for information on the project.HFCRD Priorities given to Minister Williams:1. Cell Phone usage in the classroom. Dealing with cell phone addiction.2. Vaping epidemic. What the government can do to generate an anti-vaping campaign or legislation and what HFCRD can do to provide support?3. Recruitment of specialty teachers and wellness workers.4. The need to build a replacement school for St. Andrews in High Prairie.
Conversation on Collaboration
A report was given on a recent meeting that took place with HFCRD Trustees & Staff, the High Prairie School Division, Conseil Scolaire du Nord-Ouest, and the MD of Smoky River Council. Discussion was around the potential of more collaboration with busing. Challenges include matching school calendars, insurance issues, funding allocation, and longer bus ride times.
Upcoming Student Engagement meeting
Noted that an HFCRD Committee including Superintendent Betty Turpin & Board Chair Kelly Whalen will once again meet with the Student Engagement Team to discuss student priorities. The team consists of a minimum of two student representatives from each of the 7 schools. Issues brought forward by students include cell phone usage in the classroom, vaping, and teaching protocols.
Valentine’s Day celebrations
Schools will be informed to have their Valentine’s Day Celebrations and Activities on Tuesday, February 13th this year, to ensure February 14th is dedicated to Ash Wednesday.
Charity Drives
HFCRD recently held successful charity drives, including for the Food Bank, Toonies for Tuition, Toys for Tots, and Valleyview Gives Helping Hands.
The next Board Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 21st.
