By-Election for Ward 5 - Grimshaw
A board motion was passed to authorize a by-election to fill the current vacancy for Ward 5 - Grimshaw. Nomination day will be February 20th, 2026, with the election date set for March 20th, 2026.
St. Thomas More - New School Update
The planning phase for a new school at St. Thomas More in Fairview continues. Geo-technical contractors will be on site by the end of January. The planning phase helps clarify the anticipated project scope, schedule, and cost to support site readiness.
Presentation on Supporting Student Achievement in Literacy and Numeracy
Director of Educational Services, Nicole Adams, did a presentation on student achievement in literacy and numeracy.
The goal is to improve academic outcomes through improved instructional and collaborative practices.
Literacy data for the first half of the current school year indicates that resources put in place in 2022-2023 are now showing significant improvements in reducing the percentage of students below benchmarks. The goal each year is to increase the proportion of students who are at or above the benchmark.
Numeracy data is in the early stages. A new math assessment is in place starting this year to help us better understand where improvements can be made. Our next teacher professional development day on January 30th will focus on Math, with teachers gathering at HFCRD Central Office to meet with a consultant, with ongoing support in future years.
Trustee Book Study: The Governance Core 2.0
The Board of Trustees and Senior Administration finished their first month of a book study as part of their professional development. They’re reading The Governance Core 2.0: School Boards, Superintendents, and Schools Working Together.
According to the book’s online description, it addresses the urgent challenges of school leadership in a divided, post-pandemic landscape and is considered an essential guide for school trustees and superintendents committed to making a meaningful difference in their districts. Governance Core 2.0 is organized around three pillars: Governance Mindset, Governance Culture, and Governance Infrastructure.
